Position Description:
Grantmakers for Effective Organizations GEO) seeks an experienced communications pro to serve as its manager of communications and marketing in our DC-based offices. The manager will report to our director of programs, work closely with senior staff members and have the support of our program assistant. The manager will develop and implement a full range of communications and marketing strategies to advance GEO’s mission and cultivate existing and prospective members. We seek a strategic thinker adept at both traditional and new media approaches and able to collaborate with the members of a small organization’s team. We are looking for a superb writer and meticulous editor who will help GEO position its messages with its target audiences.

Key responsibilities:
The successful candidate will have a proven track record in developing and executing communications and marketing work for a nonprofit organization. S/he will be a strategic thinker and have superb research, writing and organizational skills and the ability to help GEO develop and manage its communications infrastructure. S/he will be passionate about detail, a strong editor and comfortable working with the media and other audiences. The communications and marketing manager will work in the following areas.

Media relations – Think strategically about media and communications opportunities and direct media activities for the organization. Identify story ideas and public speaking opportunities, write and issue media advisories and press releases, make pitch calls and arrange interviews for key spokespeople for coverage of GEO reports, events, spokespeople and issues. Manage and refine organization’s press list and maintain media contact information. Cultivate key journalists covering GEO issues.

Media tracking – Follow media coverage of GEO-related issues and become knowledgeable of GEO’s field of work. Manage tracking of relevant coverage; keep GEO staff members updated on relevant coverage.

Research, writing, editing and Web work – Research and write key documents and communications tools for GEO members, the press and other target audiences. Work with researchers and freelance writers on other materials. Plan and write GEO annual report. Reinforce the GEO brand. Develop ideas for and draft OpEds and exclusive articles. Edit materials prepared by other departments and oversee copyediting processes. Manage the GEO Web site and develop it to be an up-to-date and effective resource for existing and prospective members. Help develop Webinars.

Design and production – Manage the design and production of publications and GEO’s Web site. Manage external vendors (proofreaders, designers, printers, photographers, web developers, etc.)

Special events – Assist in marketing and media work connected to all special events that GEO organizes. Help build audiences and attendance. Collaborate with partner organizations on media and communications work. Support GEO’s development department on communications connected to fundraising. Leverage GEO national conference and its keynote speakers for communications opportunities.

Requirements:
• Masters degree preferred (marketing/communications or related field preferred)
• 5-8 years progressively responsible communications- or media-related work experience
• Facility with web-based marketing and communications approaches
• Excellent writing, editing and proofreading skills; ability to develop messages and reach target audiences
• Superior project management and organizational skills; demonstrated ability to handle multiple priorities at the same time
• Facilitative leadership style and experience successfully managing teams
• Experience working with nonprofit organizations, foundations and/or membership organizations. Philanthropy experience strongly preferred.
